A New Cabin for Kilcully

In 1985, another important addition was made to Kilcully’s facilities with the construction of a new cabin with the assistance of AnCO, the state training authority of the time.

The building became affectionately known as “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”, a name understood within Kilcully to be associated with Tom O’Sullivan, who was closely involved with the campsite and would later serve as Camp Chief.

The cabin provided valuable additional indoor space at a campsite where activities had traditionally centred around Kilcully House and the camping fields. Its construction reflected Kilcully’s continuing development during the 1980s, as the campsite hosted an increasing number and variety of Scout events.

Over the years the building’s use changed and, as part of Kilcully’s later redevelopment, it was converted to provide sleeping accommodation. Externally, however, the familiar cabin has changed remarkably little. More than forty years after it was built, it remains part of Kilcully and continues to serve new generations of Scouts and visitors.
