NNational Orienteering at Kilcully

In 1982, Kilcully hosted a National Orienteering event, bringing Scouts together to test their navigation and outdoor skills.
Orienteering has a particularly interesting place in Kilcully’s history. The first Scout event known to have taken place on the grounds was a National Orienteering event in 1969, before Kilcully had even been purchased as a permanent Scout campsite.
Thirteen years later, the return of a national orienteering event to Kilcully demonstrated how far the campsite had developed. What had begun with Scouts navigating their way around a privately owned farm had become an established Scout centre capable of hosting events and groups from around the country.
Map reading, compass work and route finding have remained part of outdoor Scouting at Kilcully ever since, with an orienteering course continuing to form part of the campsite’s activity programme.
