Plans for Kilcullys Future

After more than four decades as a Scout campsite, discussions were taking place about the future of Kilcully and the need for renewed investment in its facilities.

Following changes in the organisation of Scouting in Cork, responsibility for the campsite had become a complicated issue. Proposals were being considered for new structures and improvements, with Cork Scout groups involved in discussions about how Kilcully should be managed and developed for the future.

A newspaper report from the time described the ambition to give Kilcully a “new vision”, bring the campsite up to modern standards and ensure that it would be retained for future generations of Scouts.

The article also looked back at Kilcully’s beginnings, recalling how the Murphy farm had been identified as a possible Scout campsite in 1968, the first Diocesan Camp was held there in 1969, and Scouts and supporters subsequently came together to raise the money needed to purchase and develop the property.

Although ambitious plans were being discussed at this time, the proposed development did not ultimately proceed as envisaged. Kilcully would face a difficult period before a new management team took on the challenge of revitalising the campsite in 2015
