International Camp held at Kilcully

In August 2001, Kilcully welcomed the world when more than 400 Scouts gathered for an International Scout Jamboree.

Scouts travelled from Ireland and overseas, with visitors from Germany, England, Scotland, Wales and Sri Lanka, creating a truly international gathering at the campsite. A group of 62 German Scouts had already spent several weeks at Kilcully before the main jamboree began.

Despite torrential rain at the beginning of the event, the weather didn’t dampen the Scouts’ enthusiasm. Activities included sports, hillwalking and sightseeing, along with plenty of fun around the campsite — including the water fights captured in the newspaper photographs. Songs, sketches and evening campfires brought everyone together at the end of the day.

Speaking during the jamboree, Camp Chief Tommy O’Sullivan reflected on the enjoyment the young people were getting from the event. The 2001 International Camp was another milestone in Kilcully’s history, demonstrating its ability to welcome hundreds of young people and provide a meeting place where Scouts from different countries could camp, share experiences and form friendships.
