WSJ Troop Leamhan thank Kilcully

In 2019, Kilcully played its part in preparing a group of Irish Scouts for one of the biggest events in world Scouting — the 24th World Scout Jamboree in West Virginia, USA.

The Leamhan Troop, under Troop Leader Derek Long, was one of the Irish troops preparing to travel to the Jamboree. With its members drawn mainly from Cork and Kerry, Kilcully provided a convenient central base where the troop could meet, train and prepare for their international adventure.

The Irish contingent that travelled to West Virginia was the largest Ireland had sent to a World Scout Jamboree up to that time, with approximately 400 Scouts taking part.

The World Scout Jamboree itself brought tens of thousands of Scouts from around the world together at the Summit Bechtel Reserve from 22 July to 2 August 2019.

For Kilcully, the Leamhan Troop’s preparations were another example of the campsite’s role extending far beyond simply providing somewhere to camp. It was a place where young people could meet, train and prepare for Scouting experiences that would take them far beyond Cork — in this case, all the way to a World Scout Jamboree.
