South East Regional Shield

On 11 May 1986, Kilcully hosted the South East Regional Shield Competition, bringing Scout patrols together for a day of competition and traditional Scouting skills.

Regional Shield competitions gave Scouts an opportunity to put the skills learned within their own troops into practice, working together as patrols and testing themselves alongside Scouts from other groups.

By the mid-1980s, competitions such as the Regional Shield had become a regular part of life at Kilcully. The campsite’s fields and facilities provided an ideal setting for pioneering, campcraft and the many practical challenges that formed an important part of Scout competitions of the time.

Events such as the 1986 Shield were perhaps less spectacular than the large national gatherings held at Kilcully, but they were an equally important part of the campsite’s story. For generations of Cork Scouts, it was weekends and competitions like these that created their memories of Kilcully.
